Solar-powered swimming pool heat pump

Can you run a swimming pool heat pump on solar energy?

It is best to combine a swimming pool heat pump system with solar panels to ensure that your heating and hot water needs are met and that it is environmentally friendly at the same time. Solar panels are even considered a sustainable solution for pool heating because they can provide both electricity and hot water. In addition, the heat pump does not have to work as hard, which saves on electricity consumption.

Is the existing electricity network of your home ready for it?

Power cuts when turning on powerful appliances are usually an important indication that the house is ready to increase its electrical power, as it is not unusual for users to have added more appliances over the years out of comfort. If the house is more than 25 years old, have the meter box checked to see if the wiring can supply enough power to run all your appliances.

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels are made of small solar cells and assembled into a larger panel. The cells absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current electricity. This electricity is then converted into alternate current electricity, by a device called an inverter, and fed into the internal power grid.

How long do solar panels last?

Most manufacturers give a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects with up to 25 years of outpouring efficiency of up to 95%, but if they are installed and maintained properly, you can expect them to last a long time and produce a good amount of electricity over 25 years.

How much space should be available?
The size of the system you need depends on several factors: how much electricity you use, how much money you are willing to invest and what is the size of your roof or plot for installation. You should also consider whether you want solar energy to meet all your electrical energy needs or only some of them.

Do solar panels need much maintenance?
Solar panels usually require very little maintenance and are usually self-cleaning and work well if they are slightly dusty, it is wise to remove excess dust or even hose down panels if necessary. Ideally, you should check with your installer about maintenance requirements.

Should panels be mounted on the roof or on the ground?
Roof-mounted solar panels in "portrait" are generally less expensive because they do not require any support structures. You also make use of otherwise unused space on your roof. Ground mounted panels are a good option if your roof is not suitable for solar panels. In addition, solar panels installed on the ground can be tilted and adjusted to the sun, which can increase their efficiency.

What are the costs of solar panels?

The price will vary depending on the size and type of solar panels, and whether the need is on-grid or off-grid.

Off-grid or On-grid:

Off-grid means that you have your own supply of electricity. It is possible, for example, to use a generator to produce electricity that you use in your home to power your appliances and charge batteries. However, this is an expensive way to generate your own electricity. It is cheaper and above all more sustainable to go off-grid with solar panels. Solar panels then charge your batteries and only if there is little sun for a period, do you use a generator to generate power. Even if you use a generator, you are still off-grid, because you are not connected to the electricity grid. Off-grid can be interesting for fincas in remote locations where it is too expensive to install an electricity connection.

With on-grid, you are dependent on your energy supplier. You use all the power you generate and only purchase it from the supplier if there is a shortage of solar power. The solar system functions as a basis; if there is a shortage of sun, the grid will supplement it. Stability is guaranteed with this type of system because the supply of your electricity will always run through the system. If the grid fails, the system will use the available storage and you will always have power.

On-grid systems are particularly cost-effective when there is a daily constant load, such as a swimming pool filter pump, heating, hot water boiler or air conditioning.

How much can I save with solar energy?
There are many factors involved in the actual cost savings, depending on tariff, installation, user consumption and especially the level of sunshine! Fortunately, in Spain we have an average of 320 sunny days per year.

For example: a 3KW system usually produces about 12 KWh per day, but this power is only available when the sun is shining, so it is important that you use this power or you will effectively lose it.

A pool filter system usually runs for 6 hours a day and for every hour it will consume around 1.2 KWh of electrical energy, if you use this during peak sunlight hours, a 3KW system will effectively run your pool filter pump for free (a saving of around 7 KWh a day), further excess power will be used by other appliances such as the boiler, WiFi router, TV, fridge etc. which can further reduce electrical costs. Depending on individual factors, the payback period for solar panels in Spain is usually from 4 to 7 years.

What are the main advantages of solar panels?
-Lower energy bills.
-Return on investment increases as energy costs rise for Spanish utilities.
-Battery supported systems provide immunity to power interruptions and increase power stability.
-Sustainable resource

Carefully selecting a solar power system to meet and adapt to your power needs can be a great advantage, especially in Spain where the high number of days of good sunshine can provide a quick return on investment.Careful system selection combined with the selection of the electrical tariff and the future can result in some significant savings.
